Since the 1980s, SoCalCOSH has existed as a grassroots coalition to educate, advocate and mobilize workers, community members, and policy makers to create safe and healthy workplaces in Southern California. - Awareness: Through our Community Health Education Program, we train low wage immigrant workers to advocate for their health and safety to prevent injuries, illnesses and fatalities on the job. Services include Know Your Rights workshops, publication and distribution of informational materials and brochures, and community-based presentations.
- Advocacy: SoCalCOSH is the only community-based advocacy organization in Southern California devoted exclusively to improving health and safety conditions by representing non-union, low-wage, immigrant workers in advocacy work with government agencies, elected officials and policy makers. Through our coalition of unions, workers, community and legal organizations, and Technical Assistance Program, we are building a powerful network of workers and allies to lead successful organizing efforts that result in tangible improvements to working conditions as well as providing technical health and safety assistance and legal resources. We also continuously and effectively monitor government agencies to ensure they enforce the laws that protect workers and save lives.
From building Awareness to advocating for improvements in the working conditions of low-wage, immigrant workers; from standing with Car Wash Workers in picket line to representing waste recycling workers in their fight for safe and healthy jobs; you can be sure that SoCalCOSH is devoted to playing a critical role in educating, assisting and empowering low-wage immigrant workers in Southern California and their allies to create effective and lasting solutions through partnerships, campaigns, and collective action.

SoCalCOSH Board Member's Linda Delp and Jessica Martinez are considered leaders in the Occupatinal Safety and Health Movement and provide their amazing expertise to the work we do. Linda and Jessica together with our other five board members are committed to the movement for prevention of hazards on the job, workers’ rights at work, and healthy and safe workplaces for all!
SoCalCOSH’s program activities focus on awareness and advocacy, are offered in English and Spanish and include:

Recent Successes
Your support today allows us to continue protecting people from job-related injuries, illnesses, and death by educating, assisting, and empowering workers and their allies to seek effective and lasting solutions through partnerships, campaigns, and collective action. On May 22nd, Cal/OSHA cited a Southern California recycling company for serious multiple health & safety violations. The investigation was triggered by a SoCalCOSH complaint on behalf of workers and resulted in 36 citations totaling $38,895 in penalties to the employers. These serious citations are a direct result of our dedicated assistance and advocacy on behalf of vulnerable working Californians and serve as proof of the crucial voice we provide for them.
SoCalCOSH has built a Worker Health and Safety Activist Network of labor and worker center advocates ensuring that government agencies are responsive to workers’ health and safety needs. We meet regularly with Cal/OSHA Chief Ellen Widess and Labor Commissioner Julie Su and their district office staff.
Hundreds of men and women in California die every year before their time, just because they go to work. Tens of thousands more are injured, get sick, or come down with a chronic disease every year, just because they go to work. SoCalCOSH recognizes and honors the need to mourn by partnering with UCLA-LOSH each year to organize one of the largest Workers’ Memorial Day events in the country to remember those who have been killed on the job and to inspire collective action to prevent workplace tragedies. This year, SoCalCOSH also partnered with Worksafe to release the annual Workers Memorial Day Report, “Dying at Work in California 2012: The Hidden Stories Behind the Numbers” (http://bit.ly/dyingatwork2012)

Safety and health in the workplace is not always recognized as a public health issue and does not receive the level of resources and attention it deserves. The essential work of training, advocacy, and monitoring is ongoing and requires sustainable resources. SoCalCOSH is funded through individual donations, government and foundation grants.
